'Carbon Footprint of Ships' by Dr: Prof: K.A. Simon, Director, K.MSchool of Marine Engineering, CUSAT, Kochi.
The talk gave an in depth analysis of the problem of carbon getting released into the environment by ships and technologies and methods being developed and employed to reduce the discharge by improving the design of the ship’s hull and machinery for lower specific fuel consumption and using renewable sources of energy for propulsion. Various NOx reduction methods to meet IMO Tier III requirements like Low carbon fuel, LNG, Shale gas, Methanol, ME Engines, Bio fuel, Improved hull designs, wind sails, weather routing, polar navigation etc were explained. The students and faculty interacted well and made the session worth for all.
Mr Vijendra Jain, Vice President of IMEI added some important points on environment issues being dealt with IMO thru regulations and rules.
This was followed by a talk on PSC. Mr Rai, from DGS gave an in depth view on various data available on Port state Control issues. The young seafarers got a good idea on different areas to be specially checked to avoid detention or findings affecting safety of the ships.
