ONLINE TECHNICAL SEMINAR: BALLAST WATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS OPERATIONS ISSUES: A SURVEY REPORT” 

An Online Technical meet was hosted on the topic of “Ballast Water Treatment Systems Operations Issues: A Survey Report”, on 17th Feb 2021, 1830hrs. The speaker was Mr. Mahesh Subramanian, MS Research Scholar, IMU.

Mr. Sanjeev S. Vakil, Secretary, welcomed the members explained the concept and ground rules of the online session, followed by a Welcome Address by Mr. Anil Kumar, Chairman of IMEI, Chennai branch. The speaker was introduced by Mr. Ramasamy Muthusamy, EC Member.

Mr. Mahesh Subramanian presented the survey outcomes, highlighting the issues faced in BWTS’ operations under differing port water conditions.  The significant outcomes of the study were:

–        About 80 % of survey populace had not faced any issues in BWTS operations when water quality is good. 

–        30% had faced issues of filter choking and malfunction when the water was turbid.

–        Lack of operational knowledge and good training also contributed to operational issues.

The interactive Q&A session was moderated by Mr. S. Ramesh, EC member.

Proposing the vote of thanks, Mr. Suresh Shenoi, Treasurer, thanked all the members from different branches for joining the technical meet. He thanked Mr. Kirtan of HIMT for providing the zoom platform and coordinating the entire event.

The session was concluded with Mr. Vakil informing all the members that Part 2 of the same session could be planned as there were many more questions unanswered due to paucity of time.
